Should Your Child Learn a Second Language?

Research has shown that second language study offers many benefits to students in terms of improved communicative ability, cognitive development, cultural awareness, and job opportunities.

When Should A Child Learn Another Language?

"A child taught a second language after the age of 10 or so is unlikely ever to speak it like a native," said a February 1996 Newsweek article. Through extensive research it has been proven that the earlier a child is introduced to a second language the greater the chances are that this child will master both languages.

Why Chinese
The rise of China presents new economic, political and social realities that demand greater U.S. engagement at every level. As the foundation of that engagement, we urgently need to raise the number of Americans who can demonstrate a functional proficiency in Chinese.

Why Learn Chinese Young?

Children learn languages easily as their brains have yet to hone in on one way to communicate. For them the differences between Mandarin Chinese and English are fun as they appeal to their curious minds.

Chinese isn’t the New French- it’s the new English
It's a scene playing out in more and more classrooms across the nation: Students — from kindergarten on — learning Mandarin Chinese in U.S. schools. It's partly a reflection of how parents increasingly see China's emergence as an economic power as something for which they should prepare their children.

Next hot language to study: Chinese

Chicago itself is home to the largest effort to include Chinese in US public schools. The program here has grown to include 3,000 students in 20 schools, with more schools on a waiting list. Programs have also spread to places like Houston, Los Angeles, New York City, and North Carolina.

Foreign Language in Elementary School (FLES)

The Foreign Language in Elementary School (FLES) Program provides quality language instruction, before and after school to children in Montgomery County, Maryland elementary and middle schools. Classes are coordinated through local Parent Teacher Associations (PTA) with the cooperation of the Montgomery County Public School (MCPS) System.
